Asom Gana Parishad to take a Serious Stand at today’s Cabinet Meet
The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) will oppose the Centre’s proposed controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 at the state cabinet meeting today.
The AGP is the alliance party with Sarbananda Sonowal led Bharatiya Janata party government in Assam.
As reported, three AGP minister will oppose the Bill officially in today’s meeting. AGP president and State Agriculture Minister, Atul Bora, Keshav Mahanta, State Water Resources and Phani Bhusan Choudhary, State Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister, are reported to raise the issue in today’s meeting.
AGP to oppose Citizenship Bill at Cabinet Meet today
In the past, AGP had mentioned that if BJP led government in Assam gave nod to the passing of the controversial Citizenship Bill then AGP would break the alliance with the government and make an exit.
Meanwhile, the entire state is protesting against the citizenship Bill barring the Barack Valley where people are supporting the Bill. As much as 28 organizations along with members of All Assam Student Union have been protesting against the Bill.

KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi have already garnered lot of support for his group after his entire team went door to door requesting people not to support the Bill which will ultimately lead to Assamese people losing their identity.
On the other hand, amidst protests across the State regarding the Bill, the Centre stated that only after consultations with all the stakeholders, it will decide its future course of action.
Centre to re-think on the entire Citizenship (Amendment) Bill
The Centre also assured that it will make sincere efforts to address the concerns of the people of Assam in this regard.
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh stated this during a meeting on Tuesday, which lasted for about one-and-a-half-hour, with Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal at the North Block, New Delhi.
